Fourth Year Students Joins Coastal Clean-up

by Beryl Jean Mangaron, IV - Burgos

date posted: 2009-07-02

Protecting our marine environment is one of the advocacies of the Department of Environment and Natural Resources. One of the activities of DENR is the coastal clean-up at Aroma beach last June 19, 2009 with the full support of the 28th Infantry (KAMAGONG) Battalion under the command of 2LT Chris Achanzar , and with the participation of the IV- Burgos students  of LVHS under the supervision of YES-O adviser Mrs. Elfleda Dionio.

2LT Chris Achanzar said that one of the major objectives of the activity is to emphasize the role of the Armed Forces of the Philippines in the protection and preservation of our environment. It is an effort to address and combat the problems brought about by marine debris and coastal pollution. It focuses on the need for marine conservation awareness and education among different sectors of society, particularly, coastal community of Barangay Ceboleda who directly benefit from marine resources.

During the clean-up, different kinds of waste were just dumped in the coast.  Poor sanitation and improper disposal of wastes contribute to the pollution of the ocean in that area.   Volunteers brought with them plastic bags for the clean-up.

Coastal Cleanup Day is a great way for families, students, service groups, and neighbors to join together, take care of our fragile marine environment, show community support for our shared natural resources, learn about the impacts of marine debris and how we can prevent them, and to have fun!

On the 10th day of June 2009, Lupon Vocational High School conducted a Hand Washing Drill for all the students. It was headed by the school nurse, Mrs. Loida Calicdan and assisted by the Advisers. Its purpose is to let the students know the proper way of washing their hands in order to avoid the most contagious virus this year, the influenza A(H1N1). The day before the activity, Mrs. Calicdan met with the teachers to explain to them the importance of and how to facilitate the drill.

Right after the flag ceremony, the students immediately went to their respective classrooms. The advisers showed their students the correct  way of washing their hands.

Through this program, there are lesser possibilities for their students to catch the harmful virus.
